Olympic memory

The Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium is one of the most emblematic sports facilities found in the Montjuïc Park and which forms part of the so-called Olympic Ring. It hosted the inauguration and closing of the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, as well as many other important events throughout the history of the city, which is why it occupies a privileged place in the hearts of many citizens.

Built by the architect Lluís Abellán Aynés and inaugurated in 1929 on the occasion of the Barcelona International Exposition, it hosted five of the most important league games at that time and it continued in operation until 1955, when the Mediterranean Games were held. After this last event, a period of decline passed and it was not until 1992, with the Barcelona Olympics, when the team of architects Vittorio Gregotti, Frederic de Correa, Alfons Milà, Joan Margarit and Carles Buxadé completely remodeled the stadium. Leaving aside the exterior façade, which was preserved, new stands were built inside, with a total capacity of 54,000 spectators.

High level sport

Its facilities have been classified by UEFA as a five-star stadium, with which it can host top-level international sports competitions. In 2010 it hosted the European Athletics Championships, for which it was remodeled again, and today both visitors and residents consider it, along with the Camp Nou, a major sports facility in the city. Its name honors the President of the Generalitat during the Civil War, Lluís Companys, who was shot in the same Montjuïc Castle, near the stadium.
