Lourdes Church - Barcelona, Catalonia
In the streets of the picturesque Poble-sec neighborhood in Barcelona stands the beautiful Lourdes Church. Once the parish of the França Xica area, it’s one of those hidden treasures that are worth discovering during a stroll through the city.
A bit of history
The story of Lourdes Church dates back to 1867, when it was originally built under the name of Santa Madrona. In its early years, it served as the main parish for the França Xica community and even gave its name to the surrounding square. Later, with the construction of a new Santa Madrona Church on Tapioles Street, this one was referred to as "Old Santa Madrona."
Due to the increasing number of pilgrimages to Lourdes, France, and the growing devotion to the Virgin Mary, the church was eventually renamed Lourdes Church. The change was made to avoid confusion and to honor the beloved Virgin Mary visited by so many faithful.
