What is Carrer de la Manigua?

Carrer de la Manigua is one of the oldest in the Sants-Montjuïc neighborhood in Barcelona. This road connects the center of the neighborhood with Paseo de Maragall. It takes its name from the type of tropical and swampy vegetation characteristic of the forests of Cuba, which was in the area at the time of its construction.

History of Manigua Street

Around Garcilaso street, the first buildings of the neighborhood were erected, most of them summer residences. It shares prominence with the streets of Garcilaso and de las Acàcies for having housed the walls of the Institute of Dr. Jaume Ferran i Clua (1851-1929), one of the most important Catalan scientific personalities of the 20th century. This bacteriological research laboratory, where vaccines were developed until the 1970s. The wall and the original entrance of Carrer de Garcilaso and one of the buildings of the old laboratory, at the corner of Carrer de Garcilaso and Carrer de las Acàcies, have been preserved.

Monument to Doctor Jaume Ferran i Clua

In the gardens of Jaume Ferran i Clua, stands the monument to Dr. Ferran, the work of the sculptor Josep Cañas i Cañas. The monument is a 4.5 meter high bronze statue on a 5.5 meter granite column. The monument was inaugurated on June 11, 1939, on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Dr. Ferran.
