Plaza Catalunya: A must-see in Barcelona
In the city center, the large Plaça de Catalunya is an emblematic meeting point of Barcelona, a large artery with a special life, towards which everyone converges.
The meeting point
Built in 1889, following the Barcelona Universal Exhibition held the previous year, the function of Plaça de Catalunya was, and still is today, to connect the Eixample to the historic center of the city. Since its inauguration it has always been one of the lungs of Barcelona, a place full of cafes and restaurants which have been the scene of literary and political debates and which are still today one of the main meeting points of the city. The square, which occupies 48,500 square meters, has become a symbol of the city, where public events, concerts and various citizen meetings are held. Today, it is also a major connection point for the entire city, of which it is considered the nerve center.
A square full of art
Surrounded by imposing buildings and equipped with two large fountains which embellish its upper part, this large square is also decorated with numerous examples of art, such as sculptures such as The Goddess, Josep Clara; the Monument in homage to Francesc Macià, by Josep Maria Subirachs; The Shepherds, by Pau Gargallo; as well as other works by artists such as Josep Llimona and Enric Casanova. In its basement, it preserves Avenue de la Llum, a large underground road which was one of the first shopping centers in the city and which marked the start of the great commercial activity of this place. Today, there are large shopping centers there, such as Le Triangle.
On Plaça de Catalunya, the confluence of tourists, travelers, residents, shops, sellers, banks highlights the most real diversity of the city. Sitting on its benches or on the terrace of the emblematic Café Zurich and observing all this hustle and bustle will make visitors feel very alive and an integral part of Barcelona.
Plaza Catalunya is a true symbol of the city of Barcelona. Its history, its imposing size and its function as a meeting point make it an essential place for locals and tourists. Whether to stroll, relax or simply observe the excitement of Barcelona life, Plaça Catalunya offers a unique experience. Don't miss out on visiting it during your next stay in Barcelona!
