Discovering Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia in Barcelona

One of the most emblematic and historic places in the city of Barcelona is the Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia. Located in the heart of the district, the square is a living space, full of personality, where you can breathe the neighborhood's own character. This square, also known under other names such as Placa d'Orient or Plaça de la Constitució, is part of Barcelona's history and has witnessed many of the most important events important of the city.

Path of history: from Plaça d'Orient to Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia

The transformation of the square has followed the rhythm of the times and the city. Although today it is known as Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia, it has had up to four official names: from the original Plaça d'Orient, through Plaça de la Constitució and Plaça de Rius and Tablet, until reaching the current name. Its history is as rich in facts and anecdotes as the neighborhood of Gràcia itself.

One of these stories has to do with an episode of civil resistance: the Revolta de les Quintes, which took place in 1870. During this revolt, it is said that a brave neighbor of the square started playing the bell of the clock as a call to insurrection, an act that became symbolic of Gràcia's resistance and is still remembered with pride today.

A symbol of Grace: the Clock Tower and the Town Hall

In the middle of the square, surrounded by unique buildings with flowered balconies, stands the monumental Clock Tower, created by Antoni Rovira i Trias between 1862 and 1864. With a height of 33 meters, this octagonal bell tower with clock faces on all four sides is an immovable witness to the passage of time in Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia.

This clock, which during the Revolta de les Quintes marked the rhythm of the resistance in the square, still today presides over the administrative center of the square, the old Town Hall of Gràcia. This building, the work of Francesc Berenguer and built in 1904, is decorated with a beautiful wrought iron shield of Gràcia and attractive decorative elements of windows and balconies. Without a doubt, one of the most emblematic buildings in Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia.
